Pet Advice

Scot-Petshop people love animals!

What size should I order?

The first step in finding out which size harness, clothes, or collar is right for your pet is to take accurate measurements of your pet’s body. Pets of the same breed differ in size, so when choosing a size, you need to consider both the breed and the pet’s unique measurements.

How to measure for a harness

Harness sizes are based on your pet's “girth” measurement. Don’t assume you know the size because each manufacturer’s sizes are different and they could have changed since your last purchase. To find the correct size

  • measure your pet when it is standing up because you won't get accurate measurements if the pet is sitting or lying down.
  • measure snugly around the ribcage, just behind the front legs. Allow about 10% extra for comfort. The girth should rest close to the front legs so that it is supported by the ribcage, not the belly.
  • remember that weight should be used as a guideline only, as it will not give an accurate length or width.

Scot-Petshop harnesses are adjustable, so select the size nearest to your pet’s measurement.

Have you measured your pet and still not sure of the correct size? Don’t worry; I am happy to give you advice. Just drop me an email with your question and your pet’s measurements.

How to measure your dog for clothing

Dog apparel (coats, trouser suits, sweaters, jumpers) sizes are based on your pet's length, height, and weight measurements. Don’t assume you know the size – each manufacturer’s sizes are different and they could have changed since your last purchase.

There are two key measurements to take in order to get the correct fit – the length of the backbone and the girth. To find the correct size

  • measure your pet when it is standing up because you won't get accurate measurements if the pet is sitting or lying down.
  • measure the length by measuring the backbone of the dog from the base of the neck to the start of the tail (the base of your dogs back). Start the neck measurement where the collar would sit naturally on your pet's neck/back.
  • measure around the chest ½ inch behind the front legs. This is the thickest part of the chest. This measurement is often referred to as the “girth.” Remember that this may vary by breed.
  • consider that certain breeds and over- or under-weight dogs may need a custom fit.
  • check your dog size against individual product items.
  • remember that weight should be used as a guideline only, as it will not give an accurate length or width.

How to measure your dog for a collar

Collar sizes are based on your dog’s neck measurements. Don’t assume you know the size – each manufacturer’s sizes are different and they could have changed since your last purchase.

To find the correct size

  • measure your dog when it is standing up – even for a collar – because you won't get accurate measurements if the pet is sitting or lying down.
  • measure for a new collar by measuring your dog's neck. A previous collar that still fits comfortably is a good starting place, but since manufacturers vary their measurements depending on a particular product, new measurements need to be taken. This is for your pet's safety and for maximum comfort.
  • ensure that you are able to fit two fingers (flat) easily between the collar itself and your dog's neck. A collar shouldn't be tight around your dog's neck and it shouldn't be the exact measurement of your dog's neck. A snug fit is correct and all leather stretches a little over time. The
  • remember that collar sizes are the overall size of the collar. For safety reasons, be sure of the correct size so that the collar can’t snag on anything nor can the pet slip its collar.
  • remember that weight should be used as a guideline only, as it will not give an accurate length or width.

How to measure your cat for a collar

Luckily, this is rarely necessary. Scot-Petshop cat collars are size 12"/30 cm and they will fit most cats comfortably.

Ezydog More information on our epi-degradable poop bags

To help you buy with confidence, we have detailed some further information about our epi-degradable poop bags.

EPI’s TDPA® provides a means for rendering conventional plastics degradable, and ultimately biodegradable, within a reasonable and controlled time-frame. TDPA® is added in small quantities (typically 2-3%) to the conventional plastic during the manufacturing process and allows totally degraded plastic products such as polyethylene carrier bags to biodegrade within 24 - 36 months, when disposed of in an appropriate environment.

For plastics, degradability refers to change in chemical structure and loss in mechanical properties caused by a specific environment, resulting in the plastic breaking down into small fragments. Biodegradability results from the actions of naturally occurring micro-organisms such as bacteria, fungi and algae and results in the plastic fragments being consumed. Conventional plastic materials are extremely resistant to degradation and biodegradation and persist in the environment for decades, or even centuries.

How Does TDPA®  Work?

TDPA® works by way of the oxo-biodegradation process, which occurs in two stages. In the first stage, TDPA® accelerates the plastic degradation process by several orders of magnitude, whereby the long polymer molecules are reduced to shorter and shorter lengths and undergo oxidation (oxygen groups attach themselves to the polymer molecules). This process is triggered by heat (elevated temperatures found in landfills or composting), UV light (a component of sunlight) and mechanical stress (e.g. wind or compaction in a landfill). Oxidation causes the molecules to become hydrophilic (water- attracting) and small enough to be ingestible by micro-organisms, setting the stage for biodegradation to begin.

In the second stage, biodegradation occurs in the presence of moisture and micro-organisms typically found in the environment. The plastic material is completely broken down into the residual products of the biodegradation process. As micro-organisms consume the degraded plastic, carbon dioxide, water, and biomass are produced and returned to nature by way of the biocycle.
